How is it used
The serum amylase test along with a serum lipase test is used to diagnose and monitor acute pancreatitis. It is sometimes used to diagnose and monitor chronic pancreatitis and other pancreatic disorders. A urine amylase test may be done additionally to assess the serum amylase levels. But the rise and fall of urine amylase level occur later. a urine creatinine clearance test is done along with urine amylase to evaluate the ratio of amylase to creatinine that is filtered by the kidneys. This ratio is useful to the assess the functioning of kidneys because the improper functioning of kidneys can cause a slower rate of amylase clearance. In cases of ascites, an amylase test of the peritoneal fluid is done to diagnose pancreatitis. Serum Amylase tests are done to monitor treatment of pancreatic cancers and after the removal of gallstones that have caused inflammation of the gallbladder.

FAQ’s

1) Do elevated amylase levels always indicate a pancreatic disorder?

No. Amylase levels may be elevated in gallbladder attacks and other conditions, such as ovarian cancer, lung cancer, tubal pregnancy, acute appendicitis, diabetic ketoacidosis, mumps, intestinal obstruction, or a perforated ulcer, etc. But amylase tests are neither diagnostic nor therapeutic in these conditions.

2) Can medications affect the amylase levels?

Yes. Drugs like aspirin, diuretics, oral contraceptives, corticosteroids, indomethacin, ethyl alcohol, and opiates elevate amylase levels.

3) What are P-amylase and S-amylase?

Enzyme Amylase has several different forms in different tissues ( isoenzymes). P-amylase is synthesized mainly in the pancreas. S-amylase is the amylase made mainly in the salivary glands. Serum P-amylase is elevated when the pancreas is inflamed or damaged. S-amylase is elevated in inflammation or damaged of the salivary gland.
